Last year, Level 5 Motorsports achieved a third-place LMP2 finish in its very first 24 Hours of Le Mans. An impressive result for the American team and one that will be difficult to replicate in 2012 considering the P2 field has nearly doubled. The team has been hard at work to ensure a similar, if not better, result this time around (commentary in English).
A two-car team in the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrón, Level 5 has only one car entered in the 24 Hours of Le Mans - the No. 33 HPD-ARX 03b. Last year, the team entered a Lola B08/80-Honda prior to its switch to HPD midway through the 2011 season. To collect as much Le Mans data as possible with the new car, the team brought two HPDs to the official Le Mans test days, June 2- 3. Level 5 worked to find the prime configuration for the Le Mans aero package provided by HPD and to ensure Luis Diaz made the required 10 laps for rookie orientation.
"I'm very happy to be here for my first time at Le Mans," Diaz said at scrutineering. "So far the atmosphere, the race fans, everything from scrutineering to the track has been great. I'm looking forward to the race. I've been here many days, so I'm in a hurry to get in the car and start racing. I think that the team has a good shot in the race, so I'm looking forward to all 24 hours."
