With Bourdais' team-mate Alex Popow at the wheel, the Starworks Motorsport Ford-Riley (No.2) took the chequered flag under a full course yellow and on a partially wet track. This victory comes after finishing third in the race at Watkins Glen on the 1st of July 1. After success at the 12 Hours of Sebring and 24 Hours of Le Mans with Honda HPD ARX-03b (LM P2) in the FIA World Endurance Championship, the American team has a new victory in 2012 on a third legendary circuit. Both in the WEC and in Grand Am, Starworks Motorsport leads in the series standings.

The Grand Am competitors raced over the infield road layout used from 2000 to 2007 for the F1 Grand Prix. So lapping clockwise in the opposite direction to the cars of the Indy 500 and the NASCAR Sprint Cup Brickyard 400. American commentators enthusiastically welcomed the victory of Sebastien Bourdais, who had not won in the USA since his four consecutive titles in Champ Car car from 2004 to 2007. According to tradition, the French driver and team mate Alex Popow (also accompanied by Peter Baron, the owner of Starworks Motorsport) celebrated after the finish on the ribbon of red brick located at the finish line, a reminder of the old surface of Indianapolis Motor Speedway, hence its nickname "Brickyard."
