Since Ford presented the 2016 GT as a curtain-raiser to the 2015 24 Hours of Le Mans, rumours have been rife as to the driver line-up. The American carmaker has a full schedule for 2016 with the team competing in the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in America as well as running a World Endurance Championship campaign.
The list for the Roar Before the 24, the test session prior to the 24 Hours of Daytona featured Stefan Mücke and Sébastien Bourdais, which was an indication. But until now, there had been no official confirmation.
Franchitti, Mücke, Pla and Priaulx are announced as the four official drivers for the full WEC season this year. All four are experienced endurance drivers, in GT and prototype classes. Sébastien Bourdais will not be racing the whole WEC season with Ford but will be in Daytona at the wheel of a Ford GT at the end of the week.
The WeatherTech SportsCar Championship drivers were confirmed back in November. Joey Hand and Dirk Müller will be at the wheel of the #66 Ford GT, with Ryan Briscoe and Richard Westbrook in the #67. Again, all four are experienced GT drivers and are familiar with the twists and turns of the championship circuits.
Of course, the best way to to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of Ford’s historic 1966 one-two-three at Le Mans would be to win the LM GTE PRO class in the World Endurance Championship and at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The constructor went on to win Le Mans again in 1967, 1968 and 1969. Can history repeat itself?
