WEC – The Porsche 935 "Baby" on display at Spa-Francorchamps

At the second round of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit, in a lot of way it was all about Porsche. In addition to the three 919 Hybrids entered in LM P1, two other races were organized (Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Benelux and Porsche Carrera Cup Great Britain). And a magnificent Porsche 935 was on display in the paddock.

It was mainly about the Porsche 935 “Baby” or 935/2. The car was created in 1977 in only four months of development so as to compete in the German race car championship. Its nickname "Baby" came from its low cylinders. It was driven by Jacky Ickx, six-time winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and Jochen Mass, winner at Le Mans at the wheel of the Sauber Mercedes C9. One of its sister cars, the Porsche 935 K3 driven by Bill Whittington, Don Whittington and Klaus Ludwig, won at the 24 Hours in 1979.

Ickx was in fact invited to the 6 Hours of Spa by Porsche. The multiple winner at Le Mans (1969, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1981, 1982) was very sought after by his fellow countrymen for autographs and photos. Also, the Belgian driver celebrated his 70th birthday in January.
