In modern endurance racing, each aspect has its own important role in taking victory, but there is one that is fundamental. the tyre. The right choice has to be made depending on the circuit and the circumstances, predictable or not (temperature, wet or dry surface, abrasive pavement, fast or slow corners, etc..).
If the choice of tyres is a fundamental one, it's because they are the only part of the car in contact with the ground: a car without tyres won't go very far. As explained by Denis Chevrier, Technical Delegate for the FIA, the World Endurance Championship is an open series, meaning tyre manufacturers can compare themselves against other makers and show off their advance technologies.
