Women at Le Mans race

Danica Patrick is an inspiration to women in motorsport, but was nearly an endurance racer.

Danica Patrick will start in pole position on Sunday in the Daytona 500. This is a reminder that women have also been on the grid of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Few people remember, but in 2007, Danica Patrick considered starting a career in endurance racing. The American did in fact cover twenty laps of Sebring driving the Acura LM P2 of Andretti Green Racing. Although she resisted the charm of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, others have succumbed ...

In 1930, Marguerite and Odette Siko Mareuse were the first women to compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and finished in 7th place at the wheel of a Bugatti Type 40. Since then, 56 women have taken part, the latest, Keiko Ihara, had a difficult 2012 race and the prototype retired early. In 2010, a 100% female (and 100% Swiss) crew consisting of Rahel Frey, Cyndie Allemann and Natacha Gachnang also had to retire (mechanical failure). Gachnang could return this year, her team Morand Racing  is listed as a reserve on the list of competitors invited.

Women at the 24 Hours of Le Mans :
• 56 before 1930.
• 10 in 1935.
• None between 1951 and 1971.
• Best finish : Odette Siko, 4th in 1932.
• Most frequent : Annie-Charlotte Verney, 10 participations.
