2016 Review - The year of the Brits

Aston Martin took the LM GTE Pro FIA World Endurance Cup for GT Drivers and the team and driver titiles in LM GTE in the European Le Mans Series, but several other British drivers shone this season.

Aston Martin’s Darren Turner shared the ELMS title with Alex McDowall and Andrew Howard and topped the LM GTE Pro class in the Mexican round of the World Endurance Championship. Several of his fellow countrymen also won races this year.

Ford GT drivers, Harry Tincknell and Andy Priaulx. Tincknell ended the season in style with two consecutive wins in the World Endurance Championship in Fuji and Shanghai. In between the two WEC rounds, he also won the finale of the ELMS at Estoril, taking the LM P2 title with Simon Dolan and Giedo van der Garde. In the WEC, Tincknell was teamed with fellow Briton Andy Priaulx. Having taken third place in LM GTE Pro at the 2011 24 Hours of Le Mans as BMW works driver, Priaulx took up a new challenge with Ford. He can tick Fuji and Shanghai off the list of races to be won. Next up, Le Mans...

Jota Sport and G-Drive Racing: British teams had plenty of success in the European Le Mans Series. First, Jota Sport:  Simon Dolan’s team finally won LM P2 with the Gibson 015 in a joint venture with Russian team G-Drive Racing. Dolan wasn’t the only Briton to benefit from the association with G-Drive. Alex Brundle claimed the last three races in the LM P2 class, sharing two of them with another Briton, Will Stevens. In the European Le Mans Series, the fight for the top spot was between two British teams, Aston Martin Racing and JMW Motorsport who fielded a Ferrari 458 Italia. Aston Martin Racing won overall, but JMW can boast the most wins this season.

Sam Bird and James Calado win with Ferrari. FIA WEC LM P2 champion last year, Sam Bird attracted plenty of attention from the LM P1 hybrid teams this year. He plumped for a seat as a factory driver in the LM GTE Pro class with Ferrari and AF Corse and knew he had made the right decision when he and Davide Rigon won Silverstone and Spa-Francorchamps in the new Ferrari 488 GTE. James Calado and Gianmaria Bruni won at Nürburgring. Both teams were very solid and AF Corse’s experience won Ferrari another GT manufacturers title in the World Endurance Championship: the fourth out of five.
