24 Hours, a driver, a car (26): Carroll Shelby

Winner in La Sarthe in 1959, Carroll Shelby (1923-2012) wore three hats at the 24 Hours of Le Mans: driver, car manufacturer and team manager.

Carroll Shelby became part of Le Mans history on June 21, 1959 by claiming - along with the Brit, Roy Salvadori - what to this day remains the only Aston Martin victory at the 24 Hours. He retired as a driver a few months later and became a car manufacturer, creating the Ltd Shelby American car. In partnership with the British brand AC Cars, he created the AC Cobra car, powered by a Ford engine produced by Shelby American Ltd. In 1963, Peter Bolton and Ninian Sanderson finished seventh driving the Cobra Daytona during its first appearance in La Sarthe. The following year, it was the legendary Ferrari GTO car's toughest opponent with the arrival in fourth place of Dan Gurney and Bob Bondurant.

When Ford decided to challenge Ferrari in Le Mans, the American giant - attracted by the AC Cobra car's performances - quite naturally appealed to Carroll Shelby. And it was in the capacity of Sports Director that he garnered two additional victories at the 24 Hours in 1966 (with the Ford Mk II of Chris Amon-Bruce McLaren) and 1967 (with the Ford Mk IV of Dan Gurney-AJ Foyt), in the latter year achieving a distance record that for the first time exceeded 5,000 kilometers.

In 1968, Carroll Shelby also wrote a very unique page in the history of cinema: having become the specialized preparer for the Ford Mustang since its launch 50 years ago, he provided the Mustang Fastback and Dodge Charger driven respectively by Steve McQueen and stuntman Bill Hickman (driver and mechanic for James Dean at the time of his death in 1955) in the chase scene for the movie "Bullitt".
