24 Hours of Le Mans – Roundup after 8 hours: Toyota the solid leader at midnight

Rain continued to join the party intermittently at the 24 Hours of Le Mans circuit throughout the evening, greatly affecting action on the track. Professional and gentlemen drivers alike fell prey, while the Toyota GR010 Hybrids cemented their domination.

Hypercar

After a turbulent start, Sébastien Buemi in TOYOTA GAZOO Racing’s #7 Toyota GR010-Hybrid focused his efforts on taking the lead from the #8 sister car. However, he was no match for the gap carved out by Mike Conway, then Kamui Kobayashi and lastly José María López, taking turns maintaining the lead. The Japanese marque's engineers perfectly managed the weather conditions, switching to intermediate tires when necessary. As of 21:00, the Alpine A480-Gibson was no longer in the head lap. After remaining among the top LMP2s for quite some time, the #708 Glickenhaus SCG 007 LMH managed to rejoin the Hypercars in fourth position.

LMP2

The LMP2 class lost several contenders on Saturday evening. At 21:00, United Autosports' #23 ORECA 07-Gibson held the lead. Paul di Resta took over from Wayne Boyd after his impressive stint staving off Stoffel Vandoorne in JOTA's #28 ORECA 07-Gibson. But, an accident involving two of the team's cars put a halt to the advance. Manuel Maldonado lost control of the #32 approaching the Dunlop chicane, crossed the gravel trap and hit the #23. In the aftermath, G-Drive Racing's #26 Aurus 01-Gibson driven by Franco Colapinto collided with the Richard Mille Racing's #1 ORECA 07-Gibson shared by Tatiana Calderón, Sophia Floersch and Beitske Visser. As a result, the all-female crew's prototype was forced to retire, while the #26 was able to retake the track, losing five laps in the garage for repairs. Thanks to a flawless race so far, Belgian outfit Team WRT came out of the carnage smelling like a rose. Currently, the #31 ORECA 07-Gibson of Robin Frijns, Ferdinand Habsburg and Charles Milesi is ahead of the #41 sister car of Robert Kubica, Louis Delétraz and Yifei Ye.

LMGTE Pro

Dusk echoed the first hours of the race with the AF Corse team in the lead in LMGTE Pro as night fell over the circuit. The #51 and #52 Ferrari 488 GTE Evos endured their fair share of incidents and other setbacks on the track, but remained in control up against the #63 Corvette C8.R (Antonio Garcia/Jordan Taylor/Nicky Catsburg), itself in a successful showing for its first participation. The #91 and #92 official Porsche 911 RSR-19s were still in the hunt, with all five cars in the same lap as midnight struck.

LMGTE Am

The three major players in the LMGTE Am class took turns in the lead depending on incidents. AF Corse's #83 Ferrari 488 GTE EVO driven by François Perrodo/Nicklas Nielsen/Alessio Rovera) was on top at midnight, despite a spin-out for Rovera around 22:00. Iron Lynx's #80 Ferrari trailed by approximately 30 seconds. For his rookie start in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Callum Ilott is fighting for the class win! Lastly, TF Sport's #33 Aston Martin AMR Vantage grabbed the lead a few times, but a straight ahead in the first Mulsanne chicane caused the car to lose precious seconds and fall to third position.
