To better understand the 24 Hours of Le Mans regulations, a series of articles will be published here during race week.
Briefing and Official Practice
Two briefings are organized by the Race Director of the 24 Hours of Le Mans: one for all drivers entered and one for team managers. They serve to put a fine point on the regulations specific to the circuit of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, safety concerns and procedural changes. A second briefing can take place if the Race Director deems it necessary.
Only drivers and cars that have passed the administrative checks and scrutineering are authorized to take part in official practice and drivers must drive only the car for which they have been designated, unless prior and express dispensation has been granted.
All drivers must take part in the free practice session and set the minimum qualifying time. Also, at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the drivers must complete at least five laps and cross the start/finish line at least once during one of the night free practice sessions between 10:00 p.m. and midnight.
LM P1, LM P2 and LM GTE Pro drivers must set a time at least equal to:
a) 120% of the average of the best three times set by three cars of different makes
b) 110% of the best time set by the fastest car in its class
For LM GTE Am:
a) during one of the official practice sessions, the car must set a time at least equal to 120% of the average of the best three times set by three cars of different makes
b) during one of the official practice sessions, the drivers must set a time at least equal 110% of the best time set by the fastest car in its class.
