An unexpected LMP2 podium finish for United Autosports and Ligier at Le Mans (video)

One of United Autosports' two Ligiers was forced to retire after an incident on Sunday morning, but the American team was able to count on the sister car to cross the finish line, in fifth place in the LMP2 class. The result was improved to third after two of the preceding competitors were excluded.

Since its first participation ended in fourth place in the LMP2 class at the 2017 24 Hours of Le Mans, the American team had every reason to expect a good result this year after recruiting two former F1 drivers, Paul Di Resta and Juan Pablo Montoya. Di Resta did not see the finish line after the mistake made by one of his teammates, but the Montoya claimed the third step on the podium with Hugo de Sadeleer and Will Owen.

Unfortunately, the Colombian driver (two-time Indianapolis 500 winner in 2000 and 2015) missed the joys of the podium ceremony. His Ligier JS P217 made it to the checkered flag in fifth place and was not classified as third until the next day when the marshals excluded the first and fourth place competitors. The classification in the LMP2 class will remain provisional while their appeals are pending.
