Asian Le Mans Series - Algarve Pro Racing (Ligier) triumphs at the 4 Hours of Fuji

The top step on the overall podium at the 4 Hours of Fuji in Japan, second round of the 2018-2019 Asian Le Mans Series season, was claimed by Portuguese team Algarve Pro Racing.

Track conditions were dangerously slippery at the 4 Hours of Fuji after cold weather moved into the region yesterday. Harrison Newey, who started from the first row, spun out in the formation lap. But the British driver and his teammate Andrea Pizzitola - sharing Algarve Pro Racing's #24 Ligier JS P2 - went on to turn in a flawless performance and are back in the running in the championship after their retirement at Shanghai!

The duo finished ahead of pole-sitter United Autosports' #22 Ligier JS P2 driven by former Formula 1 driver Paul Di Resta and Phil Hanson trailing by 16 seconds. The third step on the podium was claimed by ARC Bratislava's #4 Ligier JS P2 shared by Miro Konopka, Darren Burke and Ling Kang, Am class winners.

French team Panis-Barthez Compétition (#35 Ligier JS P2) pulled off an impressive showing, finishing fourth at eight seconds from the podium after incurring a penalty for excessive speed in pit lane. The winner at the Shanghai round, Spirit of Race's #8 Ligier JS P2 finished sixth, reducing the gaps among the championship leaders.

As always, the battle on the track was fierce in the LMP3 class. Nigel Moore driving Viper Niza Racing's #65 Ligier JS P3 started from the pole and once again showed off the car's top speed, but that wasn't enough for the win (sixth). At the checkered flag, United Autosports' #3 Ligier JS P3 shared by Matthew Bell, Kay van Berlo and Christian England won the class a few seconds ahead of first round winner Inter Europol Competition's #13 Ligier JS P3 and the #79 fielded by Ecurie Ecosse/Nielsen Racing.

The #11 Ferrari 488 GT3 fielded by the Car Guy team won the GT class at home thanks to James Calado, Kei Cozzolino and Takeshi Kimura. Alessandro Pier Guidi and his teammates Oswaldo Negri, Jr. and Francesco Piovanetti (beating the other Ferrari in the class, Spirit of Race's #51) and Tianshi Racing Team's Audi R8 LMS GT3 reached the third step on the GT podium.

The competitors will now be able to enjoy a holiday break before the next round at Buriram in Thailand 10-12 January 2019.
