Chip Ganassi (Ford) inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America

As an team owner, Chip Ganassi, who recently achieved a class win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, has the most impressive record in American motorsports. So it follows that he was inducted yesterday evening during the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America's annual ceremony.

Before amassing a string of victories with his team, Chip Ganassi tried his hand at driving, participating five times in the Indianapolis 500, with as best result an eighth place finish in 1983. A terrible accident at the Michigan circuit the following year put his career on hold - though the American did also make a few appearances in endurance, including at the Rolex 24 at Daytona in 1986 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1987, both of which ended in retirements.

After hanging up his helmet, Chip Ganassi created his own outfit in 1990. It was the beginning of a story that would bring him success at Daytona, whether in NASCAR (Daytona 500), with one win, or at the Rolex 24 at Daytona with a record six wins, or at Indianapolis with five. In all, Chip Ganassi Racing has won 18 championships and more than 170 races!

On June 19th, the American outfit, which entered four Ford GTs, won the LM GTE Pro class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, allowing Ford to win again 50 years to the day after its very first victory at Le Mans.
