ELMS - Greg Murphy Protoypes (Oreca): "Proceed in the ELMS in 2015!"

The head of the Irish team, Murphy Prototypes, has had a trying season - in the European Le Mans Series as well as at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. He reflects on his team's woes and is already planning 2015

What are your thoughts on 2014?
Greg Murphy: "It was a disappointing year, I must admit! At each race of the season, we received a penalty mainly because of a driver. It's hard for us because we showed we had the speed and that we were among the best teams in the LM P2 class. It was very frustrating but we still had a good year."

A few months ago, you competed at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. What do you remember about the 2014 edition?
"Ah yes, Le Mans, I remember that race well (laughs). I love the 24 Hours of Le Mans! Le Mans courses through our veins and we are very proud, each year, to be invited. Meanwhile, we were not successful in 2014 but we are counting on coming back in 2015. At the Test Day we were one of the fastest (second time in LM P2, editor's note). Qualifying went well also since we were fast. A few hours before the end of Thursday's qualifying day, we were sixth in LM P2. Then, we made a huge mistake and I take all responsibility! We simply took off to clinch the pole position because we are competitive in Le Mans and we had to try. Unfortunately, we had a big incident. We had to rebuild the car on Friday.

In the race, when the rain started at the beginning, Karun Chandhok had another incident. We made repairs and returned to the track. Right after 10:30 p.m., the car had a direction issue and we were forced to retire. It was very disappointing but it's Le Mans, a difficult race! We learned a great deal, we are now a better team. It's still a positive, we loved the week we spent on-site. We will return I hope."

Though it's still early, what are Murphy Prototypes' projects for the 2015 season?
"We have already begun to work on next year to be honest. We will mostly likely stay with the Oreca 03 Nissan. We hope to keep a driver like Pipo Derani. We have also found our Silver driver, that should happen quickly, and probably our Pro driver as well. I'm not hiding it: 2014 was a disappointing season due to driver errors, we are trying to put together the best possible combination at the wheel for 2015. In terms of championships, we want to continue in the European Le Mans Series and to compete at 24 Hours of Le Mans if the Selection Committee is kind enough to choose us."

Do you expect to participate in the FIA World Endurance Championship?
"We would like to participate in the FIA World Endurance Championship but it is a big step to take. We like the ELMS format. It works well and suits our partners. As for 2013, at Donington Park, there were only eight cars, we were there! We therefore hope to pursue this championship!"
