Five Ford Focuses and four Le Mans wins 3: 1968-1969

A long-time partner of the Le Mans Classic, Ford unveils a limited edition of five Ford Focuses. Three of them are dedicated to Ford’s Le Mans overall wins. The black one with white stripes pays homage to Ford’s first victory in 1966, and the red and white one revives the memory of the great Ford-Ferrari of the sixties is now referred to as the race of the century.

The third Focus wears the legendary orange and bleu livery of the Gulf oil company, the winning colours of the Ford GT40s entered by John Wyer in 1968 and 1969. One of the strangest stories of the 1968 running of the 24 Hours was that they were won by a pair of replacement drivers! Lucien Bianchi from Belgium and Pedro Rodriguez from Mexico respectively replaced Brian Redman and Jacky Ickx. Bianchi competed in La Sarthe for the 13th time, and unfortunately got killed in the 24 Hours practice the following year. Pedro Rodriguez saw the chequered flag as the winner for his second Le Mans finish in 11 starts.

In 1969, Jacky Ickx made history when walking to his car at the race start and taking the victory in the last lap ahead of the Porsche of Larrousse-Herrmann! This was the second le Mans start of his co-driver Jackie Oliver, who would set a speed record in the Hunaudières straight at 386kph two years later at the wheel of the Porsche 917.
