French driver Simon Pagenaud wins the 2019 Indianapolis 500!

Simon Pagenaud has won the legendary Indianapolis 500. On the scene was a very proud and immensely thrilled Pierre Fillon, President of the Automobile Club de l'Ouest, there to cheer him on.

The stunning overtaking performed by Pagenaud - at the wheel of a Peugeot 908 - on Benoit Tréluyer in the final hours of the 2011 24 Hours of Le Mans leap immediately to mind. The driver line-up he formed with Sébastien Bourdais and Pedro Lamy triumphed over Tréluyer-Lotterer-Fässler with Audi for a stunning finish.

Today, Sunday 26 May, Penske driver Simon Pagenaud won one of the three biggest races in the world, the Indianapolis 500 (the other two, the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the F1 Grand Prix of Monaco). The French driver and 2019 Indy 500 pole-sitter pulled out all the stops. He had complete control of his car, executed perfect strategy and held more than his own in a phenomenal battle with Alexander Rossi in the final laps of the race. His efforts echoed the 2011 running of Le Mans. Before the Indy 500 start on Sunday, he even said in an interview that he'd learned a great deal from the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

At Indianapolis, President of the Automobile Club de l'Ouest Pierre Fillon celebrated the historic achievement: "We've waited so long for a French victory at Indianapolis. This is fantastic. His performance was exceptional.''

The last win at the iconic oval circuit for a French driver dates back to 1914 and René Thomas.

2016 IndyCar Series champion Simon Pagenaud and winner of the Indianapolis GP a few weeks ago is now the winner of the 103rd running of the Indianapolis 500.
