Though Corvette Racing's head drivers are already hard at work at Le Mans, the two third drivers, Jordan and Ricky Taylor, will join them in the morning (Sunday) directly from Detroit where they won the 100-minute race thanks to Jordan's magnificent overtaking of Joaõ Barbosa during a restart, resulting in the lead with a little help from traffic. The second place finish for the Portuguese driver, who will support Krohn/Jönsson in the No. 40 Ligier JS P2 at the 24 Hours of Le Mans but will be absent at Test Day, gave the Corvette DP a one-two at home.
The only Ligier JS P2 at the start, the No. 60 of the Michael Shank Racing team, making its big debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans this year, experienced mechanical problems, and the other two Corvette DPs made contact, leaving room for the No. 8 Formula Le Mans (PC class) driven by Renger Van Der Zande and Alex Popow to round out the overall podium, the Mazdas unable to keep up.
In GTD, the GTLM (GT Le Mans) class competitors were absent this weekend, and the win went to Jeroen Bleekemolen and Ben Keating who will trade their No. 33 Dodge Viper for Murphy Prototypes' No. 48 Oreca 03R-Nissan in LM P2 tomorrow at Test Day in Le Mans. The duo finished ahead of the No. 73 Porsche driven by Jörg Bergmeister (who will be at the wheel of the official No. 92 Porsche 911 tomorrow in Le Mans) and Patrick Lindsey, and the No. 63 Ferrari 488 driven by Christina Nielsen (who will debut at Le Mans in Formula Racing's No. 60 Ferrari 458 Italia) and Alessandro Balzan.
Ben Keating: "It’s a huge deal, we’re supposed to be on a plane at 4 o’clock (the race ended at 2:30 p.m., editor's note). We leave here, 10 drivers in the GTD class, almost all of them on the podium, are all on the same plane heading to Le Mans. The test starts tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. and we land in Paris at 6:00 a.m. I’m really excited that we get to switch to the LM P2. And it is going to be a great month. Driving the LM P2 is like defying the laws of physics. It’s a lot of fun to drive. When I got back in the Viper after the test days last week, (with Murphy Prototypes' Oreca 03R-Nissan, editor's note) I said I don’t think the brakes are working as well as they used to and Jeroen said I’m just used to the LM P2 car!"
All the drivers present in Michigan today will need to submit to the administrative checks for approval to get in their respective cars at Le Mans tomorrow.
The next race for the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship competitors will be the 6 Hours of The Glen at Watkins Glen in Wisconsin on July 3rd.
