Jose Froilan Gonzalez (1922-2013)

Winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1954, Argentine driver Jose Froilan Gonzalez died yesterday.

Born on the 5th of October 1922, José Froilán González raced four times in La Sarthe. After three retirements driving Simca Gordini (1950), Talbot Lago (1951) and Lancia (1953), he won in 1954 driving a Ferrari 375 plus with Maurice Trintignant.

Nicknamed “The Pampas Bull" because of his physically imposing stature, Jose Froilan Gonzalez also entered the history of motor sport with Ferrari's first Formula 1 victory on the Silverstone circuit in 1951. The Argentinian quickly won the respect of his peers with his impressive pace, including the great Juan Manuel Fangio, who was his team mate at Le Mans in 1950. He also raced in La Sarthe alongside his compatriot Onofre Marimon in 1951 and the Italian Clemente Biondetti, a specialist of the Mille Miglia in 1953. To his family and loved ones, the Automobile Club de l'Ouest expresses its deepest sympathy.
