José María López (Toyota): "We're ready, but Le Mans is still Le Mans!"

José María López is gearing up to participate in his second 24 Hours of Le Mans, still representing TOYOTA GAZOO Racing. This year again, the Japanese manufacturer has just one goal, as does the Argentinian driver: to win Le Mans!

What are the main differences between the 2017 and 2018 Toyota TS050 Hybrids?

"There's really not a great deal of difference, I would say we have optimized it more meticulously than in the past. The goal is clear, simply tweak the car we have rather than develop a radically new one. Of course, performance level remains important, but mainly we just improved the car itself. We also slightly modified the aerodynamics and worked on overall reliability. Don't forget, it's a complex car. At certain moments during previous seasons, the driver was unable to get the car back to the pits in a 24-hour race. It is crucial to bring the car back so it can be repaired and return to the track, even if costs three or four laps in the interim. We have also worked on our procedures dealing with problems. We have to be ready to react in any scenario. Sure, we hope not to have any problems, but Le Mans is still Le Mans, it's an endurance race so anything can happen!"

How do you feel in the car?

"Better and better. Last year, following my accident at Silverstone, I was unable to do the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, so my return was at at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. We did a lot of laps this past winter, more than 20,000 km in all, and I feel really good in the car."

How do you feel after the Total 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps?

"I am thrilled with this result for the team. It was very challenging for us to start in last position because it compromised our chances (after scoring pole position, the driver line-up of the #7 saw all its times voided due to a fuel flow meter reporting problem, Ed.). But, in the end, we fought to come back and in the bargain managed to prove the potential of the #7. I truly enjoyed the battle and being in the thick of competition again, especially at that wonderful circuit."

You are about to participate in the 24 Hours of Le Mans once again. What do you remember about your debut at the race last year?

"It's a magnificent race, but it can be difficult and cruel, as it was for the Toyota Gazoo Racing team last year for example. But I'm happy to be able to participate in it no matter what, it's the greatest race in the world. Being with a team that is a contender for the overall win is something very special."

What do you think about the competition in the LMP1 class?

"Everyone considers us a favorite, which makes sense given we are the only constructor present in LMP1. The non-hybrid teams have a real chance as well and I know they'll be competitive at Le Mans. During the winter test sessions, some were even faster than we were. We won't be alone on the track, this is an important year in the evolution of the LMP1 class."

What do you expect of your second 24 Hours of Le Mans?

"For it to be a bit better than my first experience (retirement after an incident during the 11th hour caused by contact between the #9 Toyota TS050 Hybrid and a competitor, the start of a fire and a car that retired just a few meters from pit lane, Ed.) because now I know how it works so I can't wait to be there this year."
