Le Mans - from 24 hours prototypes to timeless classics in a matter of days

Ten days after the effervescence of the 24 Hours of Le Mans that witnessed Toyota’s first ever triumph, the circuit is relatively quiet, with just the usual track days on the Bugatti. The 24 Hours paddock is barely dismantled, and another takes it place, for the next major event, Le Mans Classic.

Le Mans is preparing to switch from 24 hours prototypes to timeless classics, celebrating the legacy of Le Mans 24 Hours with its famous biennial event, Le Mans Classic, on 6–8 July.

There is always a feeling of emptiness in the wake of such a tremendous event as the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Crews, cars, crowds and campers have all moved on and the race village is empty. It’s strange to think that just ten days earlier, the place was a hive of activity, with hordes of spectators cheering on their idols in the world’s greatest endurance race.

"In Le Mans, it doesn’t take long to go from present to past. We do it every two years!"

At Le Mans Classic, time doesn’t exactly stand still. Race pace is breathtaking, but from a spectator point of view, the gathering is a more leisurely affair. The car parks, campsites and paddocks are full of classic cars, basking in the glory of their heritage. Modern-day liveries give way to the vintage elegance of the fifties, sixties and seventies.
