Neel Jani is a bit of a pioneer. A stunning single-seaters driver, he is one of the first of his generation to - in 2010 at the age of 27 - choose endurance. With Swiss team Rebellion Racing, he formed a remarkably solid duo with French driver Nicolas Prost: together they finished fourth at the 2010 24 Hours of Le Mans. This drew the attention of Porsche, who brought him into the 919 Hybrid program at the end of 2012.
Since then, along with French driver Romain Dumas and German driver Marc Lieb, he has marked Porsche's history three times: first pole position (at Spa-Francorchamps) and first win (at Sao Paulo) for the 919 Hybrid in 2014, then Porsche's 17th pole position at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2015. He joined his fellow countryman Jo Siffert who clocked the German manufacturer's first pole at Le Mans in 1968. Like last year, Jani, Dumas and Lieb won at the closing round of the 2015 World Endurance Championship (WEC) which took place at Bahrain on November 21st. Will good fortune be his in 2016? No matter what, the Swiss driver, like his two teammates, already seems ready to fight for the win at Le Mans and the world title. We wish him the best as he turns 32 on Tuesday, December 8th!
Neel Jani: "These days, more and more young drivers are choosing a different path than Formula 1 and are turning to endurance. It's an increasingly attractive discipline: one races for big manufacturers, at the wheel of beautiful cars. And in my opinion, it has only just begun. As for me, it will be difficult to catch up to my fellow countryman Marcel Fässler and his three wins with Audi at the 24 Hours, but I think I'll be able to join him sooner or later, as well as Sébastien Buemi, 2014 World Champion of endurance drivers with Toyota. But I could become the first Swiss driver to win at the 24 Hours...at the wheel of a Porsche (smile)!"
