Peugeot Exhibition: Allure Le Mans – Peugeot's win in 1992

As the world championship was in a period of decline, Peugeot was the favorite against Mazda and Toyota at the 1992 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Philippe Alliot clocked an outstanding time during qualifying to place the #2 Peugeot in pole position at the 1992 24 Hours. Rain showers on Saturday caused unexpected repercussions such as the lead car dust-up between the #31 Peugeot and #7 Toyota, costing both cars precious time. It is no easy feat to drive at more than 300 kph in the rain! That first accident caused others, and the #31 Peugeot was forced to retire early Sunday morning.

Otherwise, overnight was uneventful for the French team, but by Sunday morning that had all changed. As one of the Peugeots was holding steady in second position, the car took a detour off the track, losing precious ground in its quest for the podium. It was, however, able to make up time thanks to the Mazda's gearbox troubles. In the end, the #1 Peugeot carved out a comfortable lead and maintained an elevated pace to put Peugeot Talbot Sport in the number one spot under the checkered flag.

Peugeot won the 1992 24 Hours of Le Mans and placed its second car on the third step of the podium. Despite the world endurance championship coming to an end, Peugeot returned to Le Mans the following year and pulled off a stunning hat trick.

The temporary Peugeot Exhibition: Allure Le Mans is available for viewing at the 24 Hours Museum until 30 September.
