Photo of the Day - A WM beats the world speed record at the 1988 24 Hours of Le Mans

On October 14, 1947, American pilot Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier for the first time (Mach 1.015) in the Bell XS-1. In 1988, Roger Dorchy surpassed the 400 km/h threshold when the #51 WM P88 was clocked during the race at 405 km/h in the Mulsanne Straight.

It is a record that will probably never be beat. At the time, the Mulsanne Straight was a true straight, without the chicanes installed in 1990. Nonetheless, great speed in the straight does not necessarily translate to a win - the WM was forced to retire - or the best in-race lap, achieved that year by Hans-Joachim Stuck in the #17 Porsche 962C, second overall behind the #2 Jaguar.
