Photo of the Day - Lyn St. James, the first American woman to race Le Mans

On 11 October 1984, during a Challenger shuttle mission, Kathryn D. Sullivan became the first American woman to walk in space. On 10 June 1989, Lyn St. James, whose real name is Sandra Lynn Eden, became the first American woman to line up at the start of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

St. James competed in the French endurance classic twice, in 1989 and 1991, in a Spice Ford (did not finish). In 1992, at the age of 45, she became the second woman to start the Indianapolis 500.

Who would have thought that an American woman would get the chance to take a spacewalk five years before one of her countrywomen would hit the Le Mans track for the first time?
