Photo of the Day – Number 5 triumphs at the 1925 24 Hours of Le Mans

On 25 October 1555, Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, announced his abdication and retired to a Spanish monastery. On 21 June 1925, a car with the number 5 won the 24 Hours of Le Mans for the first time.

Number Five has rarely brought luck at the iconic Le Mans 24-hour race, as witnessed this year with the leading Toyota’s last lap drama. Only four cars sporting this number have taken the chequered flag as winners: the Lorraine-Dietrich B3-6 in 1925 (here with the #33 Bignan), the Talbot-Lago T26 in 1950, the Aston Martin DBR1 in 1959 and the Audi R8 in 2004.
