Porsche, from the 24 Hours of Le Mans to the Cayman

Among the Porsche liveries in the Cayman Interseries, the only series racing this model, some evoke cars that raced in the 24 hours of Le Mans. Here are eight of them.

Porsche Cayman n°36 – This design of red with white streaks was carried by the first Porsche to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans, in 1970. Qualified in sixteenth this 917 K (short tail version, carrying race number 23), Richard Attwood and Hans Herrmann stayed out of touble and survived bad weather to give Porsche this coveted success.

Porsche Cayman n°3 – Called "psychedelic", this purple and green Martini design was one of the 917 L (long body) driven in the 24 Hours of Le Mans 1970 by Willy Kauhsen and Gerard Larrousse. who finished second. This is one of the most popular liveries of 917, with fans and also designers worldwide.

Porsche Cayman n°4 – It features the most famous design in the history of the 917; the blue and orange of the Gulf Oil Company, which was one of the 917 of John Wyer in 1970 and 1971. After a triple retirement in 1970, the best performance of a Gulf 917 would be the second place of Herbert Müller and Richard Attwood (No.19) in 1971.

Porsche Cayman n°23 – This Cayman is inspired by the 917/20 "pink pig" seen at Le Mans in 1971, decorated with dotted lines outlining German cuts of pork. At the wheel, shared with Willy Kauhsen, was Reinhold Joest, Audi partner today, who has scored ten Mans wins as a team owner.

Porsche Cayman n°1 – In the colours of the car that Jacky Ickx (with Derek Bell) won his sixth and final victory at Le Mans, in 1982, with the Porsche 956. The 956 won again the following year in this livery, but the the blue and white did not win again until the 962 C in 1986 and 1987 (below right Derek Bell-Al Holbert-Hans Joachim Stuck, who won in 1987).

Porsche Cayman n°7 – The yellow and black of the No.7 Cayman won the 24 Heures du Mans in 1984 under the banner of Joest Racing, with drivers Henri Pescarolo (4th win) et Klaus Ludwig (2nd win). It was the last time a crew of two drivers won in La Sarthe. At the wheel of the same car, Ludwig won again 1985, with Paolo Barilla and John Winter.

Porsche Cayman n°18 – In 1988, three 962 C carried the colours of Shell at Le Mans; two took the chequered flag. In second place were Derek Bell Hans-Joachim Stuck and Klaus Ludwig in No.17 and in sixth  Mario, Michael and John Andretti in No.19. The car of Vern Schuppan, Sarel van der Merwe and Bob Wollek (No.18) was forced to retire half way.

Porsche Cayman n°25 – The Porsche 911 added its name to the winners roster of the 24 Hours in 1998 with its fabulous 1-2 finish; Laurent Aiello, Stéphane Ortelli and Allan McNish (No.25) and Jörg Müller-Bob-Wollek Uwe Alzen (No.26). It is to this day the sixteenth and final victory of the German manufacturer at Le Mans, pending their return to prototypes in 2014.
