The Porsche 919 Hybrid winner at Le Mans kicks off farewell tour with a record at Spa

The Porsche 919 Hybrid that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans three times between 2015 and 2017 is embarking on an unusually long farewell tour. The German prototype has just launched a world tour from Spa-Francorchamps, marking the occasion with a record no less.

If you don't recognize the 919 Hybrid that allowed Porsche and its drivers to win six World Endurance Champion titles and three consecutive victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, don't worry. This is the aerodynamically modified "Evo" version destined to beat the lap record established by Lewis Hamilton last year during qualifying at the wheel of his Mercedes F1.

Also, though unnoticeable to the naked eye, the Porsche 919 Hybrid lost some weight and its hybrid system is set on "unlimited" contrary to the technical regulations in effect in the World Endurance Championship (FIA WEC) and at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The result: a time of 1:41:770 for 2016 Le Mans winner Neel Jani, eight tenths of a second faster than the four-time F1 World Champion, and most importantly 12 seconds faster than the best time at the qualifying session for the 2017 Spa-Francorchamps round (1:53:756). The numbers are staggering: a top speed of 359 km/h and an average speed of 245.61 km/h!
