The second qualifying session at the 24 Hours of Le Mans cut short

Though the 60 competitors expected two hours of track time between 19:00 and 21:00 this evening, the session was halted at 20:22 in the wake of a violent incident for Giorgio Sernagiotto at the wheel of the #47 Dallara P217-Gibson fielded by Cetilar Villorba Corse.

Under the threat of possible rain, the competitors rushed to exit pit lane when the session kicked off at 19:00. The Enso CLM P1/01 was the first to go. Five minutes later, 52 cars were on the track.

The first incidents came fast. Norman Nato at the wheel of the #35 Dallara P217-Gibson took advantage of the new clearance zone at the exit of the Porsche Curves to avoid contact with the sister car. Sven Müller (#94 Porsche 911 RSR) had an incident at Indianapolis at 19:10, plunging into the tire wall. Shortly thereafter, Mike Conway's tires locked and he skidded into the gravel trap at the Dunlop Chicane with the #7 Toyota TS050, just before Andy Priaulx had an incident at Tertre Rouge at the wheel of the #67 Ford GT. The red flag was waved only 15 minutes into the session.

The session resumed at 19:38. André Lotterer improved the #1 Rebellion R13's time, and several LMP2 prototypes were seen following suit with their respective times. At 20:10, Nicolas Lapierre had an incident at the wheel of his #36 Alpine A470-Gibson exiting the Ford corner, spraying the track with gravel, costing him a lap to return to his pit at slow speed, his right rear suspension clearly affected.

Then the #47 Dallara P217-Gibson fielded by Cetilar Villorba Corse stopped near the first corner at the Mulsanne Straight, and Giorgio Sernagiotto was able to extricate himself from the car with no problems. The session was halted for the second and final time.

To allow the competitors sufficient track time, the third qualifying session has been moved up from 21:30 to 22:00 and will end at midnight.
