Three-time 24 Hours of Le Mans winner Allan McNish tries his hand at making a tire (video)

Did you know this? As robots continue to take over entire factories, Michelin tires destined for racing cars are still fabricated by hand, one by one. Watch Allan McNish, three-time winner at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, learn how it's done.

Since the only parts of a racing car that touch the ground are its four tires, they must be both solid to support acceleration and braking as well as supple in order to make turns appropriately. Like driving, the manufacturing of racing tires is an exercise in heightened concentration as there is simply no room for error. That was the takeaway for Allan McNish, winner at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1998 (with Porsche), 2008 and 2013 (with Audi), after he worked to make a tire himself at the French manufacturer's factory. Are we looking at a post-retirement career move for the legendary British driver?
