Today's Photo Story - First class win at Le Mans in 1999 for Olivier Beretta

On January 8, 1297, Monaco was granted independence from the Republic of Genoa: according to legend, François Grimaldi, patriarch of the dynasty still in power today, infiltrated the fortress disguised as a monk so his soldiers could enter and seize it. On June 13, 1999, Monaco native Olivier Beretta clinched the first of his six class wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Though Olivier Beretta has greatly contributed to Corvette Racing's record at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, he won only four of his six trophies with the official American team. It was thanks to the American manufacturer that the Monaco native won his first class victory (LM GTS) at the 24 Hours in 1999, winning with a Chrysler Viper entered by Oreca. He had the same teammates - Dominique Dupuy and Karl Wendlinger - the same car and the same team in 2000 for the same result! Oliver Beretta is the class win record-holder at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and though one of his fellow countrymen, Stéphane Ortelli, won overall at Le Mans in 1998, he was representing France at the time…
