Though the No. 7 Audi R18 crossed the finish line in first place, the No. 2 Porsche 919 Hybrid has been declared the winner at the 6 Hours of Silverstone, opening round of the 2016 World Endurance Championship (WEC) season, following the disqualification of Audi for failure to comply with a technical regulation.
Pre-race and post-race, the cars submit to scrutineering to ensure compliance with the regulations. After the 6 Hours of Silverstone, the marshals determined the thickness of the front skid block on the No. 7 Audi R18 - driven by three-time winners at the 24 Hours of Le Mans Marcel Fässler, André Lotterer and Benoît Tréluyer - was not in compliance with Article 3.5.6 a3 of the LM P1 Technical Regulations.
Consequently, the No. 7 Audi has been excluded from the race and the No. 2 Porsche 919 Hybrid driven by Romain Dumas, Neel Jani and Marc Lieb has been declared the winner. The No. 6 Toyota now moves up to claim the second step on the podium and Rebellion Racing's No. 13 R-One the third.
Audi intends to appeal the FIA's decision.
