Scrutineering
The week begins with the second scrutineering session in Le Mans city centre. From 10am, race officials cast their beady eyes over the shiny racing cars as fans clamour for photographs.
The cars follow a strict procedure, passing from stand to stand to be scrutinised. At the first stand, they are measured with a laser tool. The measurements are all recorded, including total length, the size of the aerofoil and the wheelbase. Next, the underside of the cars is inspected. At the third and last checkpoint, the safety elements are verified, as are other key elements such as the regulation stickers and timing devices. Spectators can follow the procedure from the side-lines. This is the ideal opportunity to see the cars up close before the race begins.
Drivers will also be there to present their cars and greet their fans with autograph and photo sessions on the schedule. Their equipment – helmet, shoes and fire suit – is examined to ensure it meets safety requirements and licences are also checked. Afterwards, drivers go to the press room and then on to greet the many fans gathered on the square. They are invited on stage to say a few words on their feelings about the forthcoming race. Then they mingle with the crowd, chat to fans and sign autographs. Yes, it is possible to chat to your favourite driver! The scrutineering session is a pleasant family event. Everyone is there to share in the glory of endurance racing and savour the anticipation at the race to come.
Don’t miss the event in Le Mans city centre, on Monday 13 June 2016.
