Yannick Dalmas in the BMW V12 LMR (video)

The BMW V12 LMR that won Le Mans in 1999 was among a throng of classic cars at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed hill climb. And the driver was pretty special too! At the wheel was none other than Yannick Dalmas, one of the 1999 Le Mans winners.

The V12 LMR earned the German marque’s only victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Following a first attempt in 1998 with the V12 LM, BMW reworked its aerodynamics and engine cooling. The result was the V12 LMR, a prototype with a distinctive single roll-over hoop that improved airflow to the rear wing. The section between the front fenders was also lowered to funnel air to the radiators. Compared to the Toyota GT-One, the V12 LMR looked less accomplished, brutal even, despite the cutting-edge technology behind it. Williams F1 was appointed to build the chassis. The V12 LMR’s 580 hp and top speed of 340 kph was characteristic of the sports cars of the late 1990s, a period that preceded a turning point in the history of endurance racing: the arrival of the game-changing Audi R8.

“This car has no driver assistance” says Dalmas. “There’s no ABS, no traction control. Modern cars have lots more assistance for braking and gear-changing. This is different, but I like both ways.”
