24 Hours of Le Mans – Glickenhaus upsets Toyota at Test Day

The 62 competitors entered in the 89th 24 Hours of Le Mans have just capped off nine hours of track time for Test Day. Sunday marked the debut of the Hypercars and defending champion Toyota gave another impressive showing.

The temp was 26°C outside, 46°C on the track, when the second Test Day session got underway at 14:00. Japanese driver Nakajima (#8 Toyota GR010 Hybrid) took advantage of the sunny afternoon to best the morning session’s best time, in his first lap (3:30.440). His fellow countryman Kobayashi followed closely behind the #7 sister car (3:30.594). One half hour later, the Alpine A480 driven by André Negrão clocked a time of 3:30.276 in the Hypercar class. At 15:45, Brendon Hartley (#8 Toyota GR010 Hybrid) managed to slip under the three-minute mark (3:29.643) and the #7 Toyota spun out in the Tertre Rouge turn a few moments later, with no major consequence.

The #708 and #709 Glickenhaus 007 LMHs made gradual progress in the afternoon, closing the gap with their competitors and keeping the LMP2s at bay as shakedowns on the cars continued.

As usual, this session was an opportunity to simulate slow zone and safety car procedures. The rules under the safety car protocol have changed this year. Cars second in their classes will be permitted, once per procedure, to overtake the first safety car they follow (there are three to cover the 13.626-km circuit) to reach the rear of the line for the next safety car.

In the LMP2 class, former Formula 1 driver and Romain Grosjean teammate Kevin Magnussen set about familiarizing himself with the 24 Hours circuit. The Dane has joined forces with two fellow countrymen, one of which is his father, Jan, who after a short career in F1 represented Corvette in endurance racing. Patrick Pilet improved on the time clocked by IDEC SPORT Racing’s #48 ORECA 07-Gibson as the team’s second car remained stuck in its garage after the morning’s mishap. Shortly before 17:00, Fabio Scherer lost control of his prototype and hit the barrier at the Indianapolis corner. He was able to make it back to pit lane with a damaged rear spoiler.

The LMGTE Pro class saw remarkable progress made by Hub Auto Racing's #72 Porsche, gaining three full seconds on its best time of the morning. Settings adjustments made after the first track session paid off in the second. The #63 Corvette took the track very late after needing to change the car's powertrain (engine and gearbox). It was a major disadvantage for the American team whose C8.R did its first laps at the Le Mans circuit today. Meanwhile, Ferrari and Porsche worked to increase the gap with the two Corvettes. However, Bruni made a mistake at the wheel of the #91 Porsche half an hour from the end of the session.

In LMGTE Am, competitors experienced certain difficulties, namely several track exits and other detours into gravel traps, but without dire consequences for any of the cars involved. Harry Tincknell at the wheel of Proton Competition's #99 Porsche recorded the fastest time of the afternoon, and of the day.

The overall top 5 after Test Day:

#708 Glickenhaus 007 LMH – 3:29.115
#7 Toyota GR010 Hybrid – 3:29.340
#8 Toyota GR010 Hybrid – 3:29.622
#36 Alpine A470-Gibson – 3:30.111

LMGTE Pro | #79 Porsche 911 RSR – 3:52.938
LMGTE Am | #99 Porsche 911 RSR-19 – 3:54.472

The cars will return to the track on Wednesday for the first free practice (14:00-17:00) and qualifying (19:00-21:00).
