24 Hours of Le Mans – Toyota on top after qualifying

Toyota placed a GR010 Hybrid on top of the timesheet after qualifying for the 89th 24 Hours of Le Mans, with Alpine only trailing by eight-tenths of a second. Records in both the LMGTE Pro and LMGTE Am classes were beaten.

At 19:00, Duqueine Team's #30 ORECA 07-Gibson driven by Tristan Gommendy took the track first. He led a tight field of 50+ cars given that the qualifying session, which determined the competitors to take part in the Hyperpole tomorrow, only lasted one hour. However, the action was short-lived after IDEC SPORT Racing's Paul Loup Chatin in the #48 ORECA 07-Gibson had an incident at the Tertre Rouge turn. Nonetheless, Kamui Kobayashi in TOYOTA GAZOO Racing's #7 Toyota GR010 was still able to clock the fastest time of 3:26.279.

When the full track opened after a Full Course Yellow, things heated up in the LMP2 class. Nyck de Vries in G-Drive's #26 Aurus 01-Gibson took the lead 20 minutes into the session with a time of 3:29.523, quickly beaten by Louis Delétraz in Team WRT's #41 ORECA 07-Gibson. Twenty minutes from the end, António Félix da Costa qualified in 3:29.144 with JOTA's #38 ORECA 07-Gibson, topping the timesheet. He improved on that time to 3:28.807 in the ensuing lap and scored the LMP2 pole.

The lap record in LMGTE Pro, originally set by Gianmaria Bruni in 2018 (after three attempts, he clocked 3:47.504), was beaten by James Calado in AF Corse's #51 Ferrari 488 GTE EVO, Kévin Estre in Porsche GT Team's #92 Porsche 911 RSR-19 and Daniel Serra in AF Corse's #52 Ferrari 488 GTE EVO. The new record set is 3:46.011.

The LMGTE Am class also saw a new lap record of 3:48.620 established by Le Mans veteran Julien Andlauer. The French driver won the class in 2018. The session ended with two Porsches in the lead and the first Ferrari in third position. The fastest Aston Martin is in sixth.
