ELMS – Prema Racing takes title with 4 Hours of Portimão triumph

Italian team Prema Racing has been crowned 2022 European Le Mans Series champions following the season finale in Portugal. Meanwhile, the Iron Dames have written a piece of endurance history in the LMGTE class.

With a 24-point lead over its closest rivals, Prema Racing headed into the final round of the season as hot favourites for the title. Drivers Juan Manuel Correa, Ferdinand Habsburg and Louis Delétraz safely negotiated the showery conditions to secure victory in the #9 Oreca 07-Gibson. The Italian outfit has concluded a highly successful début season in the European Le Mans Series as champions. “It was hard because they gave me the car with a big lead and said, now I just have to drive it to the end, the Panis team is second, and they'll never catch me, but if I put it into the wall, or we have an issue, we lose the championship," said Delétraz, who took the wheel for the final stint. “It was the longest hour and ten minutes of my life. I really wanted this title, and I took zero risks. Overall, I enjoyed the season a lot. It has been a lot of stress, a lot of work, and a lot of pleasure, and in the end, we won four races. It's really amazing. I love being competitive, I love being part of PREMA, and winning a title like this is fantastic,” continued the Swiss racer, who now has two European Le Mans Series crowns to his name.

Panis Racing’s #65 Oreca finished in second place in the race itself, and also in the championship standings. Swiss team Cool Racing completed the 4 Hours of Portimão podium.

Disaster befell Inter Europol Competition in the LMP3 class. With the #13 Ligier seemingly well on the way to securing the title, driver Guilherme Oliveira struck an LMGTE challenger and was forced to retire, leaving the door open for Cool Racing’s #17 Ligier to take the honours.
The #77 Porsche 911 RSR-19 finished down in fifth place in the LMGTE class, but that proved to be enough to clinch the class title. Sarah Bovy, Michelle Gatting and Doriane Pin of the Iron Dames team (#83 Ferrari 488 GTE Evo) entered the history books as the first all-female line-up to win an ELMS race.
