Marco Werner did it again this weekend! Much to his delight, he took victory in Grid 6 (1972-1982) at Le Mans Classic, at the wheel of the #78 Porsche 936. “It’s such as great feeling to be back here on this podium, after enjoying those three 24 Hours of Le Mans victories. I’d like to thank the whole team – they did a great job. They’ve worked hard throughout the event and didn’t sleep all night. The car had a few braking and gearbox issues. They were kept really busy, especially between races at night, but they managed to do the repairs and we were ready on time. I came to Le Mans Classic with this car in 2014 but it wasn't sufficiently prepared. We changed the technical crew and here we are – I'm over the moon!”
When we asked about how the Porsche 936 performed on the track, he was quick to respond. “Achieving a lap time of 4:30 with this car is much harder than in a modern vehicle. It is tough to drive, especially with the heat, but driving this car, which was raced by Jacky Ickx and Jochen Mass, is like a trip back in time. It felt like the wheel turned 80° and the pedals 100°! When I put my foot on the clutch, it was burning hot. The last race was especially difficult.”
The German driver’s three 24 Hours victories were at the wheel of an Audi (R8 and R10) and when we asked him how it felt to win at Le Mans with a different marque, he quipped: “There aren't any Audis at these classic car events yet. There may well be one day and I’ll be back to drive one then [laughter].”
