WEC - Different aero options for Porsche and Toyota at Silverstone

Toyota had announced the color at the Prologue, the official testing sessions of the World Endurance Championship (FIA WEC) that took place April 1st and 2nd at the Monza circuit in Italy, but Porsche waited until this week to reveal its aerodynamic choice for the 6 Hours of Silverstone on Sunday.

Though last year constructors entered in the LM P1 class were able to develop three different aero kits throughout the year, that has changed in 2017 with only two possible options. Consequently, a low downforce kit is for use at circuits with long straights, like the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and a high downforce kit is for slower circuits, like those in an urban setting.

At Silverstone, kickoff round of the World Endurance Championship (FIA WEC) season, the high downforce option seems more logical given the relatively short straights, which is why Toyota has made that selection. On the other hand, Porsche has chosen the opposite, even if it means sacrificing performance level in the U.K. in order to continue developing the low downforce kit to be utilized at the 24 Hours of Le Mans on June 17th and 18th. The German manufacturer's high downforce version will not come into play until the 6 Hours of Nürburgring.

On paper, Toyota should be a favorite in terms of speed at the British circuit, but in endurance racing it isn't enough to go fast, one must make it to the finish line, which the Japanese marque, entering three cars this year at Le Mans, knows only too well after last year's 24 Hours of Le Mans…
