24 Hours of Le Mans – Kevin Magnussen (High Class Racing): “We’re there to win!”

Former Formula One driver Kevin Magnussen is getting ready to compete in his first 24 Hours of Le Mans. He will team up with his father, Jan, and Anders Fjordbach in the #49 Oreca 07-Gibson fielded by Danish team High Class Racing. The project has been in the pipeline for some time, but has now come together with an ambitious aim – top spot on the LMP2 podium.

In just a few weeks' time, you'll be making your 24 Hours of Le Mans début. How are you feeling right now?

"I’m feeling excited! We’ve done lots of work trying to get it to happen and it’s not so far away now. We were testing the High Class car recently which went really well and it was very interesting to hear everyone’s thoughts on the car and their feedback. We are all pretty lined up in what we need and require from the car which was very positive. I’m excited to get going."

Which do you feel is the biggest challenge facing you at your first 24 Hours of Le Mans? Managing the traffic, driving at night, coming to terms with the circuit's specific features, or something else?

"I’ve done quite a bit of night driving in F1 and at Daytona and Sebring so don’t think that’s such a big challenge for me. It’s cool, I really like driving at night as it somehow makes it feel faster. As far as managing traffic is concerned, that’s something I’m learning about this year in IMSA, learning about the risk and reward and dealing with slower cars.  But Le Mans is another challenge and will be different to what I’ve raced on before. It’s a unique circuit, and probably the biggest challenge is that leading into the race you don’t get a lot of laps so you really have to get the most out of practice. That’s crucial."

You'll be teaming up with Anders Fjordbach and your dad. What advice has he given you?

"We’ve been talking about this project for years so it’s hard to say what specific advice he’s given me as we’ve always talked about racing and he’s given me lots of different advice through the years. It’s therefore kind of natural for us to now go racing together; we are a racing family."

What did you learn from your day on the AOTech simulator?

"I think the most important thing was to sit down with someone who was an expert on the rules and to get used to them. There are a lot of specific rules and procedures for Le Mans which you need to be acquainted with. It’s part of the preparations we all go through so hopefully we don’t get any problems in the race."

What will be your goal in the fiercely contested LMP2 class?

"Of course the goal is to win but we know it’s going to be extremely competitive. LMP2 has some teams which are really fast and have great driver line ups but we ought to go to win or there’s no point. It’ll be great fun to race with my dad but we’re there to win!"

Which car from the history of the 24 Hours of Le Mans would you love to drive?

"The Peugeot 905 would be cool but I also really like the McLaren F1 GTR, the Mercedes CLK, the Ford GTs from the 60s and the Porsches from the 80s such as the 962."

Peugeot has unveiled its Hypercar. What is your view of this new car?

"I love it!  It looks really cool and exactly what I hoped a Hypercar would be. It’s aesthetically pleasing and untraditional for a modern race car. It’s clear that it’s not only aero engineers who have designed it and there is Peugeot DNA on the car. I can’t wait to drive it."
