Today's Photo Story - Audi triumphs with a hybrid engine for the first time at Le Mans

On November 16, 1901, Andrew Riker - in a car called the Torpedo Racer - beat the speed record of an electric car at Coney Island, New York. On June 17, 2012, the Audi R18 e-tron quattro, equipped with a combustion and an electric engine, won at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, a first for a hybrid engine prototype.

But it was no easy victory since Audi, who did not want the Le Mans trophy to go to Toyota, had entered four cars at the 24 Hours: two R18 Ultras (conventional engine) and two R18 e-tron quattros (hybrid engine). In the end, Audi scored a one-two with the e-tron quattros, and the trio Marcel Fässler, André Lotterer and Benoît Tréluyer finished three laps ahead of the first Audi R18 Ultra, third.
